“Prevention” of Breast Cancer by Surgery?
A few months ago actress Angelina Jolie made the headlines for her decision to have both of her breasts removed in order to “prevent” breast cancer. She made this decision because she had tested positive for a breast cancer susceptibility gene (BRAC), and she has a family history of cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In 2007, more than 178,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed, and more than 40,000 women died from it that year. Projecting the results to 2013, it will only be worse, because that’s what the trends are indicating!
First of all, the standard recommendation of the cancer “experts” is that if you test positive and are a “carrier” for the BRAC1 or BRAC2 genes you should have a yearly mammogram and an MRI scan once a year. This recommendation for a yearly mammogram is ridiculous! The last thing you want to do is expose a susceptible body to ionizing radiation such as you get from a mammogram. An MRI which does not emit ionizing radiation is not dangerous, and a Thermogram is far superior to a mammogram. (The results of a Thermogram can guide the necessity of an MRI because it not only does not use ionizing radiation, but it also detects heat–one of the classic signs of a cancerous tumor.) But recent research has pointed out that “women with a history of chest radiation have a 43% increase in breast cancer compared to those who had no chest radiation.”
Also, the BRCA gene mutation accounts for only about TWO PERCENT of diagnosed breast cancer. Even if you should test positive for the BRCA defect, that in and of itself does not mean you will get breast cancer. It is not an automatic death sentence! There are many things you can do to decrease your cancer risk, and the best ways are by utilizing the Four Pillars of Optimal Health as I have described in past blogs.
The study of Epigenetics has shown that your genetic code is not the final determinant of what happens to you. You have a tremendous amount of control over how your genetic traits are expressed. Your genes express themselves based on the presence or absence of appropriate nutrients, toxins, and emotions. The study of how nutrition affects your gene expression is Nutragenomics, and it is powerful.
I don’t blame Angelina Jolie for what she decided to do, but I do fault a certain part of the medical community for pushing expensive testing for the BRAC genes (much more expensive than other genetic testing), the results of which may not mean anything at all, and for pushing a “preventive” strategy which promotes amputation of a bodily part as “prevention.” This is absurd! Would you have your lungs removed if you “have a gene which may or may not lead to lung cancer?”
I have said over and over again, and I will continue to say that it is important for you to take control over your own health, and today that need is greater than ever, and it is growing. You, my loyal readers, are the choir, and I am preaching to you. But, you know people who are in the downward spiral of today’s bureaucratic medicine, and they are being sucked into the vortex. Please forward this on to them and ask them to sign up for this blog. My purpose in my writing is to help you get your health under your own control and to keep it there.
A recent study at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and 10 other prominent universities, hospitals and research institutes confirms that “women with invasive breast cancer who took high quality vitamin/mineral supplements were 30 percent less likely to die from their cancers.” And many other studies have confirmed that all of the Four Pillars of Optimal Health (FPOH) will prevent these cancers in the first place. As a refresher, the FPOH are: lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, and high quality supplements.
There are many things to do to keep bad things, including defects in the BRCA genes, from killing you or altering the quality of your life for the worse, and my job is to help you determine what those things are and how to implement them into your life. You cannot do this alone without knowledge and expertise in what you are doing. You need someone to help guide you who will listen to you and have your best interests in mind and heart.

“One of the biggest tragedies of human civilization is the precedents of chemical therapy over nutrition. It is a substitution of artificial therapy over natural, of poison over food, in which we are feeding people poisons trying to correct the reactions of starvation.”
