Don’t go breakin’ my heart!

I am increasingly concerned with the direction of the health care system in our country. Some are saying that if we don’t like Obamacare we just want to go back to the “disastrous health care system” we had before. Actually, we had a health care system that was the model for the world. We offered the very best health care available, and at no time was anyone refused treatment. People came from around the world to be treated here. The “problem” began when the government and insurance companies took over the system many years ago. Costs to the patient skyrocketed, treatment began to be rationed, and the system started to decay. Even with all this, on January 1, 2009 we had the best health care system in the world. Now, we are faced with either taking care of our health ourselves or having bureaucrats do it for us. This will not end well if you don’t take charge right now. The purpose of our blog is to teach you how to take charge. The good news—-you can take charge of your health!

 

Let’s begin this blog with a personal story about how heart medications are prescribed and what might be wrong with the process. About 20 years ago I began having a problem with a “tachycardia” (unusual beating of the heart, including skipping of beats and pounding which could actually wake me up at night). Because I was on the verge of turning 50 years old, I decided to go to a cardiologist and have a complete work-up. If something was wrong, I wanted to deal with it, and if nothing was wrong, I wanted to have a good baseline.

 

The cardiologist was concerned and ordered several diagnostic regimens. I wore a “halter monitor” for 24 hours, I had a couple of different kinds of EKG and ECG, a cardiac ultrasound, and a “nuclear stress test.” About a week after all of these tests were completed I had a consultation appointment with the cardiologist and he said the following: “Tom, everything looks really good on all the tests. So, due to your age and the symptoms, I am going to be very conservative and prescribe a low-dose statin and a low-dose beta blocker.”

 

I was incredulous! I asked him to back up and review the part of the statement which went: “everything looks really good on all the tests.” He acknowledged this again, but then told me that he and his department partners believed that “all men over 50 years old should be taking low doses of these two drugs as a preventive measure.”

 

I left his office and decided to research what to do for the condition of tachycardia myself. I came up with the fact that I was most likely not getting enough magnesium and Coenzyme Q10 through my diet. So, I supplemented with both of these and lo and behold, my tachycardia symptoms went away within days!

 

On January 15, 2014 Forbes Magazine published an article which pointed out how medical guidelines regarding the use of beta blockers  have resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths in patients in just a few years. Forbes also said that British researchers have found that by following an established guideline on treatment of heart disease with beta blockers, doctors in the United Kingdom may have caused as many as 800,000 unnecessary deaths over the last 5 years. (European Heart Journal, 2014,:35(3); 131-137) That would be comparable to the crashes of almost 2,500 jumbo jet-liners over the 5 years or 500 crashes per year! Can you imagine the yelps from the press and public if that were to happen?

 

Furthermore, more than half of the lives lost may have occurred “after the research was discredited.” It turns out that if you do have a pre-existing, serious, life-threatening condition, beta blockers may help if you are going into surgery for your cardiac condition. If you have little or no prior heart risks, beta blockers may actually do harm.

 

The journal Science Daily pointed out in 2008 that the routine use of beta blockers actually increased the odds of having an acute coronary event.

 

As for statins, in addition to their proven negative effect on muscle tissue (and the heart is a muscle), and other negative side effects, the British Medical Journal found that simply eating an apple a day might help prevent cardiovascular-related deaths in those over 50 to a similar degree as using a daily statin (BMJ, 2013; 347). And exercising about 40 minutes a day 6 days a week is far superior to taking a daily statin and the exercise has only positive side effects. In December of 2013 Medical News Today reported that “research shows that prescribing a statin to everyone over the age of 50 (remember my age at the beginning?) could lead to over 1,000 extra cases of muscle disease and more than 10,000 additional cases of diabetes.”

 

One in 4 Americans over 45 currently take a statin drug, despite the fact that over 900 studies prove their adverse side effects. Also recently “updated” guidelines will double the number of Americans being prescribed these dangerous drugs. Further, and this is really scary, the research shows that statins can effectively  nullify the benefits of exercise, which is one of the best and primary heart disease prevention strategies.

 

To quote Dr. Joseph Mercola, “the take-home message here is that even if a drug or treatment is “backed by science” (often paid for by the drug companies) this absolutely does not mean it is safe or effective.”

 

You must realize that you are responsible for your own and your family’s health–not the drug companies and certainly not the government!

Saving health care dollars!

Happy New Year! I want to start this new year with an item that demonstrates the value of a good supplement program which is implemented into your daily regimen. (Supplementation is the fourth pillar of the Four Pillars of Optimal Health.) The report was done by a management company, Frost and Sullivan (F&S), which is highly respected in the international business community. Basically, without publishing all 110 pages of the F&S report in my blog, I can say that the F&S report demonstrates that the use of specific dietary supplements can lead to large and positive health care cost savings.

The four diseases that F&S examined are: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Diabetes-attributed CHD, Age-related Eye Disease (ARED), and Osteoporosis. The conclusion of the study was that “Targeted dietary supplementation regimens are recommended as a means to help control rising societal health care costs and as a means for high-risk individuals to minimize the chance of having to deal with potential costly events and increase quality of life.” You and I are not concerned with controlling “societal” costs, but of controlling the costs to ourselves and our families. With the “changes” in our health care system occurring now and on the horizon, this becomes ever more important.

Today, approximately 75% of total U.S. health care expenditures are spent on preventable diseases, but only 3% of total health care expenditures are invested in disease prevention programs. And this includes things that are not preventable at all. For instance, “prevention” includes regular physician checkups and lab procedures on health people (including cancer screenings and blood work). In reality, this is not prevention at all. Rather, it is a form of health diagnostics, and diagnostics do not prevent illness! True prevention implies a lifelong habit of adopting lifestyle practices that are known to favor better health.

Since there is a significant amount of scientific research involving dietary supplements, this is a good place to look to see if there is a way we can take control of our own disease prevention. And indeed, there is significant scientific proof that supplements can save all of us a significant amount of money over our lifetime. But in addition, the intangible costs such as the significant physical and emotional distress of ARED sufferers and their families are also additional burdens to consider in assessing the overall quality of life and consequently the total social costs of Acute Macular Disease and cataracts.

One example of the results of this study is what that F&S has calculated that “there would be a savings of $4.76 billion per year in cumulative net osteoporosis-attributed cost savings if the target population used magnesium dietary supplements to increase intake by 100 mg per day.” And this amount of magnesium is actually far too low for almost everyone to be taking!! Effective control of osteoporosis requires much more than just magnesium. It requires other macro and micro nutrients, lifestyle changes, dietary changes, and exercise. But the effect of only adding magnesium was profound! The total savings in costs of all four diseases to society (and by extension to you) is estimated to be well over 30 billion dollars in money alone!! And there are some researchers who say that including Vitamin D and other supplements considered micro nutrients would be in excess of $1 trillion. Add in the other three Pillars of Optimal Health and you are talking real money!!

The take-away from all this is that you need to be using high quality supplements on a daily basis in order to have Optimal Health and to really enjoy life to the fullest. There is no longer any doubt in serious scientific minds!
